Troubleshooting

The problems people hit most, what causes each one, and the fix.

“No decks found”

Another app has the deck. Only one program can hold a Stream Deck. Quit anything else that talks to it (streamdeck-ui, OpenDeck, Boatswain, a second StreamController) and check autostart.

Missing udev rules. Older udev versions don't grant your user access to the device. Add the project's rules and reboot:

Non-Elgato deck. The Mirabox 293S and Ulanzi D200 don't support hot-plugging. Plug them in before starting the app.

Keys stop working when the window closes

Your desktop is stopping background apps. On Ubuntu: Settings, Apps, StreamController, turn on Run in background. Widgets such as clocks freezing is the same problem.

Hotkey or “write text” actions do nothing

The OS plugin sends keystrokes through uinput, which needs permission. Add the rule and group from the plugin's instructions, then log out and back in:

Pages don't switch automatically

Check your desktop is supported and its helper is present: the GNOME Shell extension on GNOME, kdotool on KDE. Other Wayland compositors besides Hyprland and Sway aren't supported yet. Page switching setup.

High memory use

A known issue the developers are working on. Large video wallpapers and many animated keys make it worse; try still images if memory is tight.

Discord plugin doesn't connect

It works with the official Discord client only, not Vesktop, and needs a Discord application client ID and secret with http://localhost:9000 set as the redirect URL.

Getting a log for a bug report

  1. Quit StreamController from its menu so nothing is running.
  2. Start it from a terminal in the stream-deck folder: .venv/bin/python main.py
  3. Reproduce the problem, then copy the terminal output. Remove your username if you want.
  4. Post it with the steps to reproduce on GitHub Issues or the project Discord. Plugin bugs go to that plugin's own repository.

Questions

Why does StreamController say no Stream Deck is connected?

Usually another program is holding the deck, or your system lacks the udev rules that let your user open it. Close other deck apps, add the rules, and reboot.

Why do my Stream Deck keys freeze on Ubuntu?

Ubuntu stops the app running in the background when its window closes. Allow “Run in background” for StreamController in Settings, Apps.

Why don't hotkeys from my Stream Deck work on Linux?

Sending keystrokes needs access to uinput. Add the OS plugin's udev rule, put your user in the input group, and log in again.
