Stream Deck on Ubuntu and Mint

Download one zip, run one script, and change one setting you shouldn't skip.

Checked against StreamController 1.5.0-beta.16 on 24 October 2026.

Download

Get stream-deck.zip (4.0 MB). It contains StreamController 1.5.0-beta.16 and an install script.

Install

Open a terminal in your Downloads folder and run:

Terminal
$ unzip stream-deck.zip
$ cd stream-deck
$ ./install.sh

Enter your password when asked. The script installs the apt packages StreamController needs, creates a Python environment in the folder, adds the Stream Deck permission rule and an app-menu entry. Keep the stream-deck folder where it is; the app runs from it.

Allow it to run in the background

This is the Ubuntu-specific step that catches most people. If Ubuntu isn't allowed to keep StreamController running after the window closes, the keys stop responding and widgets like clocks freeze.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps and choose StreamController.
  3. Turn on Run in background.

Page switching on GNOME

When you first turn on automatic page switching, StreamController asks to install its GNOME Shell extension. Accept it; GNOME doesn't otherwise let apps see the focused window on Wayland.

Installing by hand

If you'd rather not run the script, these are the system packages the project lists for Ubuntu 24.04:

Terminal
$ sudo apt install gir1.2-xdpgtk4-1.0 libgirepository1.0-dev libportal-gtk4-1 libportal-gtk4-dev build-essential libdbus-glib-1-dev

Then follow the manual steps.

Questions

Why does my Stream Deck freeze when I close StreamController on Ubuntu?

Ubuntu may stop apps running in the background. Open Settings, go to Apps, choose StreamController and turn on “Run in background”.

Is StreamController in the Ubuntu App Center?

No. Download stream-deck.zip from this site and run the included installer, as shown on this page.

Does it work on Linux Mint?

Yes. Mint uses apt like Ubuntu, so the same installer and steps work unchanged.

Does page switching work on Ubuntu's desktop?

Yes. Ubuntu uses GNOME, so StreamController offers to install its GNOME Shell extension the first time you enable automatic page switching.

Plug it in and start mapping keys.

StreamController is free. Download the zip, run one script, and plug your deck in.
